Dear Jake,

I’ve got a problem: I’m poor. Not starving or homeless poor, but poor enough that just making the rent every month and paying for the necessities pretty much takes my whole paycheck. This is a consequence of my job, which I love—I work at an environmental not-for-profit. I feel like we’re doing good work, making New York a cleaner, healthier place, and I like my coworkers and boss. What’s begun to bug me, though, is going out with all my college friends who work in for-profit industries like finance and law. They always want to hit the fancy new restaurants and bars and then split the bill.

I do love my friends; they’re good people and I know they’re not trying to make me uncomfortable, but they are. What should I do?

Sincerely,

Poor Polly
